Shigeyuki Masaoka

Shigeyuki Masaoka was born in Osaka, Japan, in 1977. He graduated from Doshisha University in 1999 and received his Ph.D. from Kyoto University (Synthetic Chemistry and Biological Chemistry, Graduate School of Engineering) in 2004 under the supervision of Professor Susumu Kitagawa. He joined the laboratory of Prof. Matthew J. Rosseinsky at the University of Liverpool as a postdoctoral research fellow. Then, he moved to Department of Science, Kyushu University, as an Associate Professor in the laboratory of Prof. Ken Sakai in 2005, and concurrently became a PRESTO Researcher supported by Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) from 2009 to 2013. He started his independent career at the Institute for Molecular Science as an Associate Professor in 2011. In 2019, he was promoted to a Full Professor at Department of Applied Chemistry, Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka University. He received the JSPS Prize in 2017, the Yomiuri Techno Forum Gold Medal Prize in 2019, Osaka University Distinguished Professor in 2019, and James Hoeschele-AsBIC Award in 2022. His current research theme includes the creation of pentanuclear metal complexes, development of molecular modules for artificial photosynthesis, and small-molecule insertion into organic molecules.
