Caryn E. Outten
Dr. Caryn Outten is the Guy F. Lipscomb, Sr. Professor of Chemistry at the University of South Carolina. She earned a B.S. in Chemistry and Biology from the College of William and Mary, followed by an M.S. and Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from Northwestern University. After completing a postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins University, she joined the USC Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in 2005. Notable awards she has received include the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) in 2010, the South Carolina Young Scientist Award for Excellence in Scientific Research in 2013, elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 2019, and the South Carolina Chemist of the Year Award in 2022. Her research focuses on the intersection of redox biology and bioinorganic chemistry by investigating how microorganisms sense and regulate intracellular iron and redox metabolism.
