Maribel Navarro
29 years of research experience in the field of Inorganic Chemistry, with particular emphasis on Metals in Medicine, Catalysis and Solution Chemistry. The greatest scientific and academic achievements are gaining a full professorship at the Venezuelan Institute of Scientific Research (IVIC) and currently at Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF), author of 90 scientific articles, 3 patents (two granted and one submitted) and 8 book chapters; 51 invitations to deliver lectures at various worldwide chemistry conferences / meetings and prestigious academic institutions; attendance at 87 national and international scientific meetings. Reviewer for the most important international journals in the field of inorganic and biological chemistry (e.g. Coord. Rev., J. Inorg. Biochem., J. Med. Chem., Inorg. Chem., Bioorg. Med. Chem., Eur. J. Med. Chem., New J. Chem. Dalton transition, Metallomics, etc.) as well as international projects and PhD theses (France, Australia, South Africa, Uruguay, Brazil, Venezuela). Additionally, my name appeared in the prestigious list of Stanford/Elsevier's Top 2% Scientists Rankings in 2021, 2022 and 2023, and in 2024 ScholarGPS placed me in the top 0.5% of all scholars worldwide in the field of Tropical Diseases and Biological Activity.
At IVIC, was mentor of 15 undergraduate students, three master and four doctoral students, and one postdoctoral researcher. Since 2017, I am a Full professor at UFJF supervised four PhD students, five master students and 16 undergraduate students. Currently, I am supervising one postdoctoral, one doctoral student, and four undergraduates. Examiner of several undergraduate, master and doctoral theses. International experience teaching courses in the areas of expertise. Beside the scientific achievements, successful management of projects and important administrative functions as a Deputy Head of the Chemistry Centre and Head of the Bioinorganic Chemistry Laboratory at IVIC. Coordinator of graduate programs and committees for research projects. Responsible for the organization of several national and international symposia and conferences. At UFJF, I am the head of the Bioinorganic Chemistry and Catalysis Laboratory, and from 2019-2021, I was the deputy head of the Chemistry Department.
International research experience at IVIC, Purdue University, University of North Carolina, University of Western Australia, Murdoch University and National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (INMETRO). Responsible for the development of numerous research projects related to Metals in Medicine. Main research areas: synthesis, characterization and mechanistic studies of metal complexes with biological activity against different diseases such as Malaria, Leishmaniasis, Cancer, Inflammation and Chagas’ Diseases. Substantial experience working in international and multidisciplinary teams, with chemists, biologists, biochemists, pharmacists and industry representatives.
